Transformational Leadership Influencing Mission Implementation of Thai Universities

Abstract

The purposes of this research were: (1) to study transformational leadership of Thai Universities in Bangkok; (2) to study mission implementation of Thai Universities in Bangkok; (3) to find a relationship between transformational leadership and mission implementation of Thai Universities in Bangkok; and (4) to analyze the influence of transformational leadership on mission implementation of Thai Universities in Bangkok. Data were collected from 310 participants who were university personnel working in five Thai Universities in Bangkok and suburban areas. The research questionnaire was used as the instrument to collect data. Descriptive statistics consisting of percentage, mean and standard deviation, and inferential statistics consisting of Pearson Correlation, and Multiple Regression Analysis were used to analyze the collected data. The research results showed that: (1) transformational leadership of Thai Universities in Bangkok, in total, was perceived at a high level. In particular, inspirational motivation had the highest mean value, followed by idealized effect, intellectual stimulation and individualized consideration respectively. (2) Mission implementation of Thai Universities in Bangkok, in total, was perceived at a high level. In particular, learning and teaching had the highest mean value, followed by academic service, research conduct and cultural conservation respectively. (3) Transformational leadership was positively related to mission implementation of Thai Universities in Bangkok, which the highest correlation was a relationship between intellectual stimulation and mission implementation. (4) Transformational leadership had an influence on mission implementation of Thai Universities in Bangkok, which can be ranked as intellectual stimulation, idealized effect, inspirational motivation and individualized consideration respectively. The recommendation from this study is that transformational leadership should be applied in higher education institutions in order to improve quality of education and sustainable communities.
